Google Date Dropdown Date Filter Box on Search Result Pages

Google Date Drop Down Date Filter Box on Search Result PagesGot a nice tip from Tech Recipes. Have you ever wanted to sort your search results by the most recent indexed pages or return only the latest search results, well now you can. Actually you always could do it via Advanced Search options, but who has the time to deal with all that and plus its not as cool as the drop down box on your search page.

Simply attach these parameters to the end of your search URL string: &as_qdr=d and voliá you’re date filter drop down box automagically appears.

In the image I use the drop down to search for the latest SEO jobs on craigslist while sorting by the pages indexed in the past 24 hours. Amazingly 429 SEO jobs have been posted on Craigslist in the past 24 hours!

Ebay File Suit Against Craigslist

Big brother sues little brother.

http://news.ebay.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=305980

Ebay a shareholder of Craigslist.org is suing Craigslist.org with claims of having their stake unfairly diluted.  Of course Craigslist has denied these allegations and is attempting to clear its name.

Craigslist is thinking that Ebay is planning a hostile takeover of Craigslist.org or a sale of their stock to an unfriendly party.  Craigslist is dismissing all negative comments by eBay.  If what Craigslist says is true then it’s a real shame eBay chose to do business this way.

Is eBay being a bully?  Will we soon see Craigslist fully owned by eBay … ending their partnership???

I know Craigslist have attorneys but they are going up against eBay (who did $7.7 billion last year).  Hey, Craig it might be time to put ads on Craigslist.org — it’s time to get your money up so you can fight back the right way!  My grandpa always said “If you not saved by God then hire a team of lawyers!”

How to Rewrite Articles Using Article Spinners Software

Writing articles is a great way to gain exposure and branding. It’s a way to become an industry leader and share knowledge. The problem is that article writing is going to always create duplicate content in some way or another. Duplicate content is a problem for search engines — there is not much you can do about external duplication, but you can at least control internal duplication.

First, you need to be sure that your website pages doesn’t have excessive duplication. Normal internal duplication is okay and consist of pages such as: print-friendly pages, archive pages, or URL trailing slash (/) pages, etc. As long as you don’t manually create any duplicate pages on your website you should be okay, use this as your rule of thumb.

So how do you stop external and internal content from intermingling and causing round-robin duplicate content issues. Easy, you have original content on your website and duplicate content for the public. When you write an article or blog post you should also rewrite that same article or blog post and share it with the public. You first need to write the main article.

Tips for writing the main article:

  • Choose a thoughtful and enticing article title
  • Focus on a particular topic or keyword
  • Write with a lot of adjectives and verbs because these can easily be substituted
  • Include 1-3 relevant links in the Author resource box
  • Write something which is useful, helps others, or entertain others this usually include: how-to’s, reviews, humor, etc.

If you had a website about a widget then you can create an article with an title similar to: “How to Use the Widget to Simplify Your Life”

Everything is weighted on the article title, because the title is what will lead to a click, if the article title is poor then you can forget about a click. Once the visitor gives you a click then its up to the article to be compelling and hold the visitor interest. If the article is interesting enough then its more probable that the visitor will seek out your other articles and/or click on the links in your resource box to learn more about you, your product, or your service.

Now since we went over a basic article writing procedure and its effects it is time to figure out a solution to promote articles in the most effective way without losing the quality or readership of the article. The key is to focus on uniqueness and originality. Using article rewriting software you can spin your articles in less time than it takes to write a new article. With that said, it does take some effort from you when using article rewriting software and article spinners.

Here is where things get tricky, to use article rewriting software you will need to know how to write for article spinners, such writings involve:

{fine#good} as {wine#juice} or {fine|good} as {wine|juice}

The output will produce 4 variations:

“fine as wine” or “good as wine” or “fine as juice” or “good as juice”

For each set of keywords in curly brackets {} separated by the pound sign # or pipe sign | it is a replacement keyword. In a real-world scenario one might have 10 or more keywords engulfed in the curly brackets, though for this research it uses only two keywords per set.  I recommend, that you use unique articles on your website and rewrite those articles to share publicly.

The rewrite syntax is also used in the article title and author resource box. The work comes from finding synonyms for the keywords, this is where the thesaurus becomes your best friend. In the beginning writing in this manner is difficult but as time goes on and you write more articles using the rewrite syntax things get easier.

Rand Fishkin Interview with Matt Cutts

Eat, sleep, and breathe Matt Cutts.  He is a high profile Google Engineer.

The tip is just know what he says, it will make you a better SEO.  Here’s a good place to start - Rand Fishkin (SEOMoz.org) interviews Matt Cutts:

Flight Centre Australia’s Largest Travel Site Busted for Cloaking

Ouch! That gotta hurt.

Flight Centre Caught for Cloaking Australia Biggest Travel Website
Rand of SEOMoz.org (one of my favorite SEO resources) reported that FlightCentra.com.au got busted for cloaking. Rand was on a panel at SMX Sydney with Danny Sullivan and Adam Lasnik when the intention was to review DiscoverTasmania.com, but while doing the review they stumbled upon Flight Centre which was found out to be using sneaky cloaking schemes. The big ouch in this story is that Adam Lasnik was there, Google’s Search Evangelist. It’s bad enough being caught by Rand & Danny, but being caught while a Google engineer is onsite commands the attention of swallowing your throat!

White Hat Blog Comments Tips

Let’s start something new.  Each week (Friday) I will give a simple SEO tip.  It can be as simplee as a one liner!

To start I will give a tip on blog commenting –

Tip#1: Be first!  The top comments get the most human click throughs
Tip#2: Comment on new blog post.  New blog post can increase link age.  If you post to new blog post before search engines crawl and index the page then when the bot crawls the page and notice your link the link age clock begins, within six months when that page has value and page rank the search engine will also value your link due to its age and association with the page.  Blogging on old post is easily detected as blog comment spam, especially if done in the masses.
Tip#3:  NoFollow still follows.  I am even inclined to say the nofollow rule doesn’t apply to fresh post, its only when the page has some age the nofollow attribute weighs in.  I haven’t validated this last tip so I will take it with a grain of salt, but I do know Yahoo! and MSN do not honor the nofollow tag so that is worth the comment.
Tip#4:  Only post relevant blog post.  Read the blog entry, then post a unique, useful, and relevant blog post, this will increase your chances of getting the blog comment approved and when a human visitor reads your comment they are more likely to click through if your post is relevant and useful.

If you have any more tips related to blog commenting then please share.

Skybus Goes Out of Business

Skybus was short lived (first launched 5/2007), they went out of business today!  Bankrupt!  For those that don’t know, Skybus was a new airline that had competitive rates.  They had flights for as little as $50 one way.  Skybus was able to deliver the most competitive rates by sacrificing other luxuries of airline travel such as no serving or stocking of food or snacks.  They also had select airports which they flew out of, these airoports were mostly minor airports on the outskirts of the major cities - the smaller airports are cheaper to fly from for airlines.  To ensure the lowest rates you were subject to Skybus flight schedule, available flight dates, available flight times, and airport locations.

I never flew, but I always kept their airline in the back of my mind in case I need it.  It’s not the best flight for business travel, but for leisure travel it seemed to be a okay deal, the cheap seats feel didn’t ever go over well with me, because I felt if they were penny pinching on all luxuries, then are they penny pinching on maintenance and flight staff as well.  Like, did they only adhere to the law when it came to maintenance, but never went above and beyond with A+ inspection?  Did they mostly employ pilots who were fresh out of school and completed their training, just to save money.  The other reason I never flew is because the available airport was an hour away.  I stay 10 minutes from a Airport, but Skybus didn’t have any airlines there.  Regardless my quirks, I know longer have to contemplate – now the airline is out of business!

Rooket Media Launches RemoteGurus.com - Freelance Programming, Custom Web Design, SEO Jobs, Content Writing Projects, & Much More!

Rooket Media is one of mine — self promotion

SEE THE PRESS RELEASE HERE

RemoteGurus.com is a website similar to GetAFreelancer or ScriptLance.  It is where you will come to either find jobs or find outsourced talent.  The goal of course is to build traffic and loyalty.  It’s a very basic design, because I am no web designer, but I think the current look can still take me to the next level.  In time I hope to get a custom professional design.   The site actually been around for a little while, but I never took it serious until now — I just didn’t have the time.

RemoteGurus.com makes it easy to find SEO jobs and projects or to find SEO talent as well as all types of freelance or outsourced opportunities.  Freelancing is the act of selling your skills and experience in an open market.  Buyers who are seeking skilled outsourced talent will post their job/project on RemoteGurus then providers will receive an email about the newly created job/project if it relates to their provided services.  The provider will have the opportunity to place a bid for the job/project and the buyer will select a winning bidder.  It is a pretty slick way of doing business and finding new business.

Currently, RemoteGurus.com is 100% free to post & bid on jobs, this is only for a limited time.  In the future the site will charge a posting fee and bidding fee, just not sure when yet!  But I’d suggest joining now, because early birds will always have more perks, even when paid options are in place.

Google Adsense Scrolling Ads … How Clever(ly)(stupid)

Google Scrolling AdsGoogle announced the release of their scrolling text ads technology, which allows you to page through the Google Adsense ads found on webmaster sites.

What a brilliantly STUPID idea?  Who wants to scroll or page through a bunch of third-party advertisements.  Maybe if they made any serious headway with their pay per call advertising model then that would work in this scenario, but for their contextual text ads its pretty senseless.  Plus isn’t the point of contextual advertising is that you deliver me ads relevant to the page content, I shouldn’t have to go looking for relevant information right?  Is this somewhat of an admission of a failed technology?  Maybe I am reaching a bit, but I still think scrolling text is a stupid idea with so many other things they can be working on or improving.  And for Google to state they’ve been testing this STUPID idea for months is ridiculous and hilarious to me, especially since its a small change that can probably be coded in less than a full day.

Google I can tell you what you should be working on when concerning Adsense, how about better reporting metrics for Adsense.  How about a Adsense content targeted links, where your code finds relevant words in the page content and makes a anchor text link out of it while giving publishers control on the number of links.   How about creating a mechanism to allow publishers more control over the ads on their pages?  How about Adsense interstitial (full page) ads?  There’s a million other things to worry about instead of giving visitors the ability to page through third-party ads when most are trying to block ads anyway!
